The New Parent Support Program (NPSP) is a program offered to Army families to enhance parent and infant attachment, increase knowledge of child development and provide connections to the support services that allow parents to become nurturing and capable caregivers. The NPSP staff consists of licensed social workers and registered nurses who provide in-home parenting education, support and resource linkage.
What if I already have children?
You do not have to be a NEW parent to participate in the program! Army families that are pregnant or with children through the age of three years are eligible for NPSP services.
What can NPSP do for me?
- Home Visitation -- A registered Nurse provides supportive and caring services to military families that are pregnant or with children through the age of three years. They can talk about your concerns as a parent or parent-to-be and help you learn to cope with stress, isolation, post deployment reunions and everyday demands of parenthood in the privacy of your home. To schedule a home visit, call 256-876-5397.
- Play morning -- Available on Redstone Arsenal. An interactive playgroup to assist parents in learning developmentally appropriate play techniques and to help children improve their social, cognitive and motor skills. Structured activities include singing, story time, a craft project and free play time. Meets on Tuesday and Thursdays from 9:30am - 11:30am at 1413 Nike Street. Open to anyone with children 0-5 years of age and have access to Redstone Arsenal. Play morning Flyer
- Dads 101 -- A class taught by men for men! Caring for a brand new, tiny, fragile baby can be the most challenging job a dad will ever have to face. Many never get the hang of it, leaving all the childcare issues to the mom, which is not good for mom, marriage, or the baby. The goal if this class is to provide new dads with important skills they need to pitch in and be the best, most effective dads they can be! Look for upcoming dates!
- Parenting Class -- These classes provide an opportunity for "hands-on" practices that assist parents in making informed, responsible decisions about all aspects of caring for their child during those first formative years. Dates and times will be announced.
